What Is Temp Mail? A Simple Guide to Temporary and Disposable Email

Temporary, disposable, throwaway: what these inboxes are, how they work, and when one is the right tool.

Published 25 October 2026

Almost every website wants your email address before it lets you in, whether that's a free trial, a PDF, a Wi-Fi portal or a coupon. Hand over your real address and you often get months of marketing mail in return. Temp mail is the way out: an address you use for one sign-up and then forget.

Temp mail, in one sentence

A temp mail address is a real, working email address that exists for a short time (minutes to hours) so you can receive a confirmation email or one-time code without exposing your personal inbox. You will also see it called a temporary email, disposable email, throwaway email or burner email. They all mean the same thing.

How a disposable inbox works

  1. A temp mail service owns one or more domains and accepts mail for any address on them.
  2. You pick or are given an address, for example yourname@ one of those domains.
  3. Anything sent to that address is shown to you in a web inbox (or through an API).
  4. When you are done, you simply stop using it. Nothing links it back to you.

That's also its weakness: because the domains are public and shared, many sign-up forms keep a list of them and refuse them. We cover that in why websites block temp mail.

Free temp mail vs. a temporary Gmail address

There are two broad kinds of temporary inbox, and they suit different jobs:

  • Free temp mail on the service's own domains. Instant and free, ideal for newsletters, downloads and forums that accept any address.
  • Temporary addresses on gmail.com or icloud.com, issued for one specific site. These pass "no disposable email" checks because the domain is a mainstream provider. See how temp Gmail works.

When temp mail is a good idea

  • Trying an app or a free trial before deciding to keep it.
  • Downloading a whitepaper, ebook or coupon that is gated behind an email form.
  • Keeping marketing lists and data breaches away from your main inbox.
  • Testing your own product's sign-up and email-verification flow with many accounts.
  • Creating a second account where the service allows it.

When to use your real email instead

A temporary inbox goes away, and so does access to anything tied only to it. Don't use temp mail for banking, government services, purchases you may need receipts for, or any account you want to recover later with "forgot password". Respect each site's terms, too: temp mail is for privacy, not for abuse.

Is temp mail safe?

It is safe for what it is designed for: receiving a code or a link. Treat anything sent to a temporary inbox as non-private, never use it for sensitive documents, and change the email on any account you decide to keep to an address you own.

Getting a temp mail address

With a free account you can open a free temp mail inbox instantly, or get a gmail.com or icloud.com address for a specific site. Paid mailboxes that receive nothing are refunded automatically, so you only pay when the email arrives.
